This article describes the discrepancies in the self-system in selected types of mental disorders. Analyses rely on E.T. Higgins’ self-discrepancy theory and results of clinically oriented studies inspired by this model are presented. The article is a critical review of the available empirical data in order to look for characteristic features of self-structure specific to given types of metal disorders. Some therapeutic applications of Higgins’ theory are also discussed.
