The main goal of this paper is to analyze the role that self-regulation mechanisms play in risk taking. The first part of the paper describes different risk theories in which risk taking is modeled as a behavior associated with low or high level of self-regulation. The second part shows results of an experiment in which we primed people’s attitudes towards risk. Results of this experimental study confirmed assumptions that risk taking associated with a low level of self-regulation is indeed different from risk taking associated with a high level of self-regulation in the sense of their psychological nature. The study also showed that one can influence the two risk taking tendencies in a specific way.
